Hierarchical Task Analysis

Deconstructing the Mental Load

Most service failures aren’t caused by a lack of features, but by a lack of clarity. Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) is a surgical tool used to deconstruct a high-level goal (e.g., renew a subscription) into its nested sub-goals and physical operations. By mapping these layers, we see exactly where the path to completion becomes unnecessarily convoluted.

The Strategic Value:

HTA allows us to spot logic gaps in a service flow. If a sub-goal requires the user to leave the current ecosystem to find information elsewhere, the brand loses its stickiness. By streamlining the hierarchy, we reduce the cognitive labor required to interact with the brand, making the experience feel invisible and frictionless.

The Expert Tip:

Look for the deep branches. If a simple goal requires more than three levels of sub-tasks, your service is likely suffering from feature creep. Prune the hierarchy to protect the user’s focus.
